First Nigerian Ebola Patient Recovers



The first Nigerian to be diagnosed with the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has made full recovery and has been discharged from hospital.

Nigeria's Minister of Health Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu in a statement said''the first Nigerian to be diagnosed of EVD, a female doctor, was discharged home on Saturday.... At present, 5 of the patients have almost fully recovered.''

He also said  the Nigerian National Health Research Ethics Committee did not approve the use of an experimental drug called Nano Silver for the treatment of EVD.

''Last Thursday, I announced that we were ready to deploy an experimental drug, nano silver, ...I regret to inform you that the drug did not meet the requirements of the National Health Research Ethics code.

"Accordingly, approval for its use was withheld by the National Health Research Ethics Committee,'' he said.

The statement added that other candidate drugs are currently being evaluated by the Treatment Research Group for EVD.

In the statement, the number of confirmed EVD cases was updated to 12, while those on surveillance in Lagos is now 189, and 6 others are under surveillance in Enugu, Southern Nigeria.

The total number of people on surveillance is now 195 while 4 deaths have so far been recorded.

He said patients undergoing treatment have now been moved to a new 40 bed capacity isolation ward provided by the Lagos State Government and additional equipment has also been made available to the new isolation ward by the Federal Government.
